2018 Scholarship Winners

2018 BAR STUDY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS 

We are pleased to announce that we have selected SEVEN winners for our $1,000 scholarship contest! We send our thanks to everyone who applied and so generously contributed to the community. It makes us proud to know all the good work that is being done by the students of NCCU School of Law. We hope this will benefit the winners as they study for the bar exam in the upcoming months.

Tiffany Lawson

<!– –>Hello my name is Tiffany N. Lawson a recent graduate of North Carolina Central University School of Law (Spring 2018 Yay). I am 28 years of age. I am a Native of North Carolina who will be sitting for the upcoming District of Columbia Bar Exam. My friends tell me that I am only interested in this bar exam because I am a die hard Washington Redskins fan. Well, maybe there’s a little truth to that (LOL). I plan to practice in the area of Family and Property Law.

DeShantell Singleton

<!– –>DeShantell Singleton hails from Georgetown, South Carolina. She attended the University of South Carolina and earned a bachelor’s degree in media arts. Ms. Singleton will sit for the South Carolina bar exam in July, and thereafter she will begin her law career in the public interest sector. She is very grateful to be a recipient of the Christina Pendleton & Associates Bar Study Scholarship, which will allow her to intensely focus on studying for the bar.

Tyler Ellis

<!– –>Tyler Anita Ellis is native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She studied Political Science at North Carolina State University and graduated with honors in May 2014. After graduation, Tyler worked in Risk Management at a Medical Malpractice firm, before attending law school at North Carolina Central University School of Law. Prior to graduating with honors from NCCU School of Law in May 2018, Tyler was actively engaged in her community as she served as a Dean’s Ambassador, a peer mentor, and worked in the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. Additionally, Tyler was a senior editor for the North Carolina Central Law Review, a member of Tax Council, and a graduate assistant. In July 2018, Tyler plans to take the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) in Washington, D.C. before pursing her LL.M in taxation at Georgetown Law in order to purse a career as a Tax Attorney. In her free time, Tyler enjoys exercising, reading, and spending time with her family, friends, and her Yorkshire Terrier, Bear.

Cody Boykin

My name is Cody L. Boykin and I am a 2018 Graduate of THE North Carolina Central University School of Law. I am going to be sitting for the July 2018 North Carolina Bar Exam. I have been offered a position with McCollum Law in Cary, NC upon passing the bar where I will be working as an associate with the firm as a Criminal Defense and Family Law Attorney. My dream is to one day work my way up to be a Judge, State or Federal, and at any level. I live in Cary, NC and I am a huge car enthusiast. I decided to become an attorney so that I could give back to my community and to help those facing the justice system that need guidance and support. I am excited to see what doors the Lord opens for me and I am extremely grateful to Christina Pendleton and Associates for this Bar Study Scholarship!!

Alexandra Cornelius

My name is Alexandra (“Alex”) and I will be taking the North Carolina bar in July. I plan to focus my practice on real estate and estate planning in Wilmington. I earned my bachelors degree from Meredith College, a place that taught me how to be a leader and to serve my community. My support system which has helped me get to this point consists of my faith, my husband, Jordan, my dalmatian, Pierce and my family.

Calleesha Teel

<!– –>Calleesha Teel is a native of Greenville, North Carolina and proud alumna of Winston-Salem State University where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 2013. After graduating from college, she was a 911 Telecommunications Operator for the Winston-Salem Police Department for two years. Calleesha is a recent graduate of North Carolina Central University School of Law, and was a participant of the dual-degree program; obtaining her Masters of Library Science simultaneously. After taking the bar, she will be moving to Georgia to begin her career in Criminal Law.

Aviance Brown

<!– –>Aviance Brown is a 2018 graduate of North Carolina Central University School of Law that hails from Greensboro, North Carolina. Aviance obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. During her undergraduate career, Aviance became interested in a legal career when she realized the inequities faced by minorities both in her community and nationally. This fueled her to re-charter an NAACP Chapter at UNC-Charlotte. She also became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated where she served as the President and Social Justice Chairman.

At NCCU School of Law, Aviance served as the Student Bar Association President, President of the Christian Legal Society, member of Phi Delta Phi International Legal Society, and the Vice-President of the Civil Rights Society.

In July, Aviance will take the NC bar exam. Upon passage, she plans to practice civil litigation defense.
