Common Symptoms of a Traumatic Brain Injury

by Nikita Wolf, Trial Attorney with the Pendleton Law Team

A Traumatic Brain Injury (commonly referred to as “TBI”) is a serious injury that should not be taken lightly.  Many people believe that a person must strike their head on something to suffer this injury, but that is actually not true.  While many TBIs are the result of a strike or blow to the head, sometimes just the force of the head moving back and forth is enough to jostle the brain and cause this injury.

Common Symptoms Associated with a TBI Include:

  • Persistent headache
  • Dizziness or feeling light-headed
  • Dazed, “fogginess,” or confusion
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Changes in memory and concentration
  • Taking longer to perform tasks
  • Fatigue or a sudden urge to sleep
  • Struggles to understand what a person reads or what is said to them
  • Clumsiness or loss of balance

People who suffer from TBI will often have changes in their personality that only the others around them are able to see.  This can include becoming more irritable, a change in appetite or sex drive, experiencing a lack of motivation or loss of interest in hobbies, and even bouts of depression and other mood swings.  The injured person often doesn’t realize these changes have occurred or will even out-right deny that those changes have happened.

Only a doctor can diagnose a TBI and yet it is the most commonly missed injury when a person visits an emergency room after a car accident.  If you or a loved one suspect someone has suffered a TBI as the result of a car wreck, it is very important that those symptoms are documented and the person is seen by a doctor as soon as possible for further testing.

The brain is an incredibly complex organ and a TBI case is just as complex.  Trust the Pendleton Law Team to know exactly the right resources you need and how best to handle your complicated case.  Call us at 804-250-5050 today!
